Here is some information I have found that you may find useful

Haemorrhoids or Hemorrhoids?

There are several ways that haemorrhoids are spelt. Haemorrhoids is the old fashioned spelling, a more common spelling these days is hemorrhoids and I have even seen this word spelt hemroids. They are also called by other names, the most common of these being piles, though I shall leave it to your imagination as to what others may have conjured up for this nasty and painful condition. In my posts I will probably alternate between the various more common spellings though it remains that regardless of the spelling, the discomfort is still the same.

What Are Haemorrhoids?

In layman’s terms, haemorrhoids are an enlargement or swelling of the cushion vein within your back passage. When pressure within these veins is increased, swelling occurs and then form lumps. The enlarged tissue then becomes irritated which often is when the symptoms start to appear. This will typically start with an itching sensation.

When And Who Can Get Them?

It is estimated that about 50% of the population will suffer from haemorrhoids at some stage of their life, and mostly dissipate without incident or the need for treatment. Most commonly they are associated with pregnancy due to extra pressure from the baby lying on top of the rectum, and the elderly as the tissues within become less supportive. Other reasons for haemorrhoids are due to constipation, which can cause us to strain thus adding extra pressure to the bowel, or spending too much time sat on the toilet, which tells the body that we are trying to pass something when there is nothing to pass, which increases pressure naturally.

Types Of Haemorrhoids

There are two types of haemorrhoids, external and internal , the most common of which are internal and are graded.

External Haemorrhoids

External haemorrhoids will appear as a small lump outside the body and will be more painful and bleed for a while.

Internal Haemorrhoids

Internal haemorrhoids are graded as such.

Grade 1: These are the most common. They are small swellings which cannot be seen or felt externally. Sometimes they can grow and become Grade 2.

Grade 2: These are larger and still remain within you. They can be pushed out when going to the toilet, but will pop back inside almost

immediately after.

Grade 3: These will be felt outside as small lumps and should be able to be pushed back inside. (Not a pleasant thought I know).

Grade 4: These will stay outside and will refuse to be pushed back. These can become quite large.

For a complete comprehensive guide to haemorrhoids I recommend you take a look here.

Hemorrhoids warts are not at all a type of hemorrhoid. We call them like that, but they are really known as anal warts or rectal warts.

I believe some people have adopted that name for them, as they are easily confused with external hemorrhoids.

The reason for this confusion is that they sometimes bleed bright red blood like external hemorrhoids. They can also grow to a size that take over the anus, causing irritation, burning and pain thus feeling an annoying disturbance exactly like an external hemorrhoid.

Rectal warts are growths that are caused by a particular virus which usually spreads by direct human contact only.

Anal warts if left untreated, may with time cause cancer to the anal area.

There are various treatments available that a medical doctor can take to remove the warts. From simply applying a freezing agent on the wart, but this may cause skin damage around the wart.

To using a cauterization method or even surgical removal. This will depend on the surgeons decision, and the size and quantity of the warts.

The only prevention is not to touch, or have sex with a partner that has anal warts.

Very important: If you have anal warts refrain any sexual activity, until you have cleared yourself completely from them.

Although not a life threatening situation. It is of utmost importance to see a doctor immediately, so that you may resume your sexual activities soon after and at the same time avoid any possible danger of cancer.

Hemorrhoids treatments are many fold, and certainly some may work for you while others won’t. Hemorrhoids remedies will help with the relief though will not deal with the root cause of the problem. To cure hemorrhoids you need an effective that tackles hemorrhoids symptoms and the reason why the hemorrhoids appeared in the first place.

Here are some simple things you can do to get you on your way. The first two go without saying.

Eat a high fibre diet, plenty of fruit and vegetables and plenty of fluids (alcohol increases blood pressure so is not advisable in case you wonder).

Take regular exercise.

Avoid the urge to force a movement on the toilet.

Do not spend too long on the toilet (it’s not a library or puzzle room).

Get a good night’s sleep (as this will reduce stress which builds pressure).

Avoid straining when lifting heavy objects.

So, having a healthy diet, taking regular exercise, avoiding straining and getting a good night’s sleep are all ways of reducing the risk of getting hemorrhoids. For more detailed information take a look here.

I am often asked can hemorrhoids bleed for weeks and why?

The answer is simply Yes.

Hemorrhoids can bleed for weeks at a time.

However other ailments such as colon cancer, diverticulitis, crohn’s disease, polyps in the colon or rectum, and ulcerative colitis can also bleed for many weeks.

It is therefore imperative that you are absolutely certain that you are suffering from hemorrhoids bleeding and not something else.

The reason that your hemorrhoids can carry on bleeding for weeks is that you put big pressure on them every time you evacuate on the toilet. This added pressure burst open the hemorrhoid and causes them to bleed.

The process is repeated every day or every time you evacuate.

Thus deteriorating the hemorrhoids further and further. They will also bleed more and more, longer and longer.

A good example for you to relate to what is happening with hemorrhoids that bleed for weeks, is like having an open wound which you rub vigorously(exerting pressure)on a daily basis.

You can now comprehend, that whatever antiseptic ointment you put on this wound, or whatever other treatments you do to this wound. It will be very hard for it to work, because of the daily irritation you are causing to this wound

This same theory applies to hemorrhoids.

That is why it is very important that you learn how to evacuate on the toilet, without adding any pressure whatsoever on the hemorrhoids.

When you start applying this evacuation process daily, your hemorrhoids will not only stop bleeding, but they will actually heal, and never return.

A colon polyp is a growth on the wall of the colon. You could get one polyp or more than one at the time. These polyps present themselves as flat or they could be raised. They can vary in size from the size of a pin head to the size of a golf ball.

Polyps growths in some circumstances appear because of cancer, in other instances they can become cancerous and in other situations they just remain benign, which means they never become cancerous.

Anybody can get polyps, but it is more prevalent if you are over the age of fifty, or you have had polyps before, or if you have had uterus or ovarian cancer, or if any of your family members have had polyps.

Other situations that make it more risky to get polyps is the following:

If you eat a lot of greasy foods

if you smoke

if you drink alcohol excessively

if you live a sedentary lifestyle

if you are overweight

The most common symptoms for polyps is none at all, but in certain situations blood in the stools, or in the pan, or diarrhea or even constipation can occur. These very same symptoms that can easily be confused with hemorrhoids.

A colon polyp is usually diagnosed in either two ways. The first and preferred way is a colonoscopy. This is where the surgeon uses a flexible tube with a light on the end, inserted though your anus.

The second is Barium X ray. This is where barium and air is slowly pushed in the bowel, through the anus with a small pipe, and an x ray is then taken.

The only option for polyps is to remove them surgically. The obvious reason for this is because if left alone, they can become cancerous. This is usually automatically done when diagnosed, via a colonoscopy procedure.

For polyp prevention you must do the opposite of the above mentioned risks. Namely, no smoking, very little greasy foods, little alcohol, plenty of exercise, and loosing weight, especially if you are nearing the age of fifty.

To top it all up a high fibrous and calcium diet is also recommended for prevention.

I have studied hemorrhoids and other digestive disorders for more than 20 years and while it’s true that hemorrhoid surgery can bring relief for most types of hemorrhoids – bleeding hemorrhoids, internal hemorrhoids, external hemorrhoids – it is not without it’s own possible side-effects. And it is not without pain. A hemorrhoidectomy can be an extremely painful operation. You will need pain-killers and time off work to recover. It can be a month or two before things begin to feel “normal” again.

Unfortunately, hemorrhoid surgery is not always 100% successful – I have consulted with many hemorrhoids sufferers who have had multiple operations, and have not been cured. The important factor most doctors and surgeons neglect to tell hemorrhoid sufferers is that hemorrhoid surgery is not a cure, as such – it is removing the symptom, which is the swollen vein.

If the actual cause of the hemorrhoid is not addressed, recurrences can, and often do, occur.

In my experience, hemorrhoid surgery can be avoided. During my many years of working with hemorrhoid sufferers, they often asked if there were any effective natural hemorrhoid treatments they could try before resorting to hemorrhoid surgery. The doctors always told them not to bother with such remedies. Yet there are many natural hemorrhoid remedies which will shrink hemorrhoids, stop bleeding hemorrhoids and reduce pain. While these do not necessarily offer a permanent cure for hemorrhoids, they do allow you to get on with life, while you treat the underlying causes.

There are many simple supplements which will help address the actual reasons why hemorrhoids occur. These can assist in strengthening the veins and improving the digestive system – most hemorrhoids sufferers find many added health benefits from this, apart from a cure for hemorrhoids.

These supplements have been the subject of clinical studies which have shown extremely effective results. This is the reason I question why doctors advise hemorrhoid sufferers against the use of natural hemorrhoid treatments. Considering some of the possible side-effects of prescription and over-the-counter hemorrhoid remedies, especially those containing cortis. I have often read that the best way to cure hemorrhoids is hemorrhoid surgery. This is frequently suggested by medical practitioners and laypeople alike as the most effective way to get rid of hemorrhoids

Yet I wonder: On what basis is this advice given? Certainly not research.

Digestive Basics – Hemorrhoids

What are hemorrhoids?

The term hemorrhoids refers to a condition in which the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed.

Hemorrhoids may result from straining to move stool. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, aging, chronic constipation or diarrhea, and anal intercourse.

Hemorrhoids are either inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external).

What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

Many anorectal problems, including fissures, fistulae, abscesses, or irritation and itching (pruritus ani), have similar symptoms and are incorrectly referred to as hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening. In most cases, hemorrhoidal symptoms will go away within a few days.

Although many people have hemorrhoids, not all experience symptoms. The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is bright red blood covering the stool, on toilet paper, or in the toilet bowl. However, an internal hemorrhoid may protrude through the anus outside the body, becoming irritated and painful. This is known as a protruding hemorrhoid.

Symptoms of external hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus that results when a blood clot forms. This condition is known as a thrombosed external hemorrhoid.

In addition, excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching, which may produce a vicious cycle of symptoms. Draining mucus may also cause itching.

How common are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half of the population have hemorrhoids by age 50. Hemorrhoids are also common among pregnant women. The pressure of the fetus in the abdomen, as well as hormonal changes, cause the hemorrhoidal vessels to enlarge. These vessels are also placed under severe pressure during childbirth. For most women, however, hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy are a temporary problem.

How are hemorrhoids diagnosed?

A thorough evaluation and proper diagnosis by the doctor is important any time bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stool occurs. Bleeding may also be a symptom of other digestive diseases, including colorectal cancer.

The doctor will examine the anus and rectum to look for swollen blood vessels that indicate hemorrhoids and will also perform a digital rectal exam with a gloved, lubricated finger to feel for abnormalities.

Closer evaluation of the rectum for hemorrhoids requires an exam with an anoscope, a hollow, lighted tube useful for viewing internal hemorrhoids, or a proctoscope, useful for more completely examining the entire rectum.

To rule out other causes of gastrointestinal bleeding, the doctor may examine the rectum and lower colon (sigmoid) with sigmoidoscopy or the entire colon with colonoscopy. Sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy are diagnostic procedures that also involve the use of lighted, flexible tubes inserted through the rectum. What is the treatment?

Medical treatment of hemorrhoids is aimed initially at relieving symptoms. Measures to reduce symptoms include

warm tub baths several times a day in plain, warm water for about 10 minutes
application of a hemorroidal cream or suppository to the affected area for a limited time

Preventing the recurrence of hemorrhoids will require relieving the pressure and straining of constipation. Doctors will often recommend increasing fiber and fluids in the diet. Eating the right amount of fiber and drinking six to eight glasses of fluid (not alcohol) result in softer, bulkier stools. A softer stool makes emptying the bowels easier and lessens the pressure on hemorrhoids caused by straining. Eliminating straining also helps prevent the hemorrhoids from protruding.

Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In addition, doctors may suggest a bulk stool softener or a fiber supplement such as psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel).

In some cases, hemorrhoids must be treated endoscopically or surgically. These methods are used to shrink and destroy the hemorrhoidal tissue. The doctor will perform the procedure during an office or hospital visit.

A number of methods may be used to remove or reduce the size of internal hemorrhoids. These techniques include

Rubber band ligation. A rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid inside the rectum. The band cuts off circulation, and the hemorrhoid withers away within a few days.
Sclerotherapy. A chemical solution is injected around the blood vessel to shrink the hemorrhoid.
Infrared coagulation. A special device is used to burn hemorrhoidal tissue.
Hemorrhoidectomy. Occasionally, extensive or severe internal or external hemorrhoids may require removal by surgery known as hemorrhoidectomy.
How are hemorrhoids prevented?

The best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to keep stools soft so they pass easily, thus decreasing pressure and straining, and to empty bowels as soon as possible after the urge occurs. Exercise, including walking, and increased fiber in the diet help reduce constipation and straining by producing stools that are softer and easier to pass.

Hemorrhoids do not discriminate based on gender, sex, or geographical location. Any given time approximately 4% of the population in the United States suffers from hemorrhoids. That means this condition affects over 10 million people at any one time. Although it does not discriminate, men tend to be at a greater risk for getting hemorrhoids.

Men are at higher risk because demographically they are more prone to vascular problems. However, women can suffer from hemorrhoids due to any number of common factors such as diet, insufficient fluid intake, family history of hemorrhoids, vascular problems or the increased pressure on the anal region during pregnancy which can result in the development of a hemorrhoid.

The type and severity of a hemorrhoid will determine the symptoms one might experience. Hemorrhoid suffers can experience any number of the following symptoms:

A burning sensation in or around the anus

Itching which is usually is usually associated with mucus discharge from the hemorrhoid

Bright red blood, which may be visible on the stool, toilet paper, or inside the toilet bowl after a bowel movement

Pain during a bowel movement
Hemorrhoids manifest either inside the anal canal or externally around the anus. Pain is more commonly associated with external hemorrhoids because of the concentration of nerve endings around the exterior of the anus. This concentration of never endings is why external hemorrhoids can be very uncomfortable and painful. It is also possible for an external hemorrhoid to develop a blood clot inside the inflamed and swollen vein. An external hemorrhoid that develops a blood clot is called a thrombosed hemorrhoid.

An internal hemorrhoid can become very painful if the hemorrhoid begins to protruding outside of the anus. This is commonly referred to as a protruding hemorrhoid. This particular type of hemorrhoid can make bowel movements particularly painful.

To help prevent hemorrhoids, and to reduce the symptoms associated with existing hemorrhoids the following are some general guidelines and actions someone suffering from hemorrhoids can take.

Dietary and Lifestyle Considerations:

Stay very well hydrated, one should be drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day.

Incorporate foods into your diet high in fiber such as fruit and vegetables and whole grains.

Incorporation of physical activity into your routine, exercise can help to improve and strengthen the vascular and circulatory systems.

At Home Treatment for Swelling and Discomfort:

Soaking the infected region, either by sitting in a bathtub of plain warm water or in a sitz bath for 10 to 15 minutes.

Topical application of ice to affected area to help reduce swelling and relieve pain.

Application of over-the-counter topical ointments and creams specifically formulated to reduce swelling and numb pain.

To relieve itching associated with hemorrhoids, witch hazel, an extract from a witch hazel plant, can be applied to the affected area with a cotton ball or swab.

Invasive Procedures:

For more severe cases of hemorrhoids, the above at home treatments may not be effective in resolving the issue. If this is the case, more invasive type procedures may need to be implemented to resolve the problem. Here are some of the procedures a healthcare provider may employ to rectify a severe hemorrhoid.

Rubber band ligation is a common procedure to treat severe hemorrhoids. By placing a band at the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off blood flow, causing the hemorrhoid to wither away. Sclerotherapy is a procedure that requires an injection into the hemorrhoid of a specially formulated solution, which will aid in the shrinking of the hemorrhoid. For the severest of cases, a hemorrhoidectomy may be performed, which is the surgical removal of the hemorrhoidal tissue.

Hemorrhoid treatments are often searched for on the internet because they are such a common problem, and you, the hemorrhoid sufferer, want to find the quickest and easiest solution to your problem. Finding the right hemorrhoid treatment may be your best hope to eliminating your hemorrhoids before resorting to surgery. You probably have tried ignoring your hemorrhoids at the beginning, but have gotten to the point, where that is no longer possible. Turning to the internet to find hemorrhoid treatments, you know that there are many websites offering their products out in cyberspace.

It can be confusing to read the various ads which usually contain only sales pitches, and little factual information about hemorrhoid treatments. Our company, Natural Herbway, emphasizes that we have your well-being as our first priority, and we want you to be as informed as possible about all the types of home remedies and medical treatments available. We believe that the more informed you are, the better will be your choice in selecting an appropriate hemorrhoid treatment for yourself.

We can not stress enough that before you attempt to find a hemorrhoid treatment for yourself, you should see your doctor for a diagnosis. You need to be sure that you have hemorrhoids. There are other diseases that should be ruled out, such as anal cancer, fissures, pruritus ani, and other conditions. At the doctor’s office, you will likely receive a digital rectal examine, and if necessary an instrument will be used to view the interior of the rectum. Further testing may be advised to rule out other gastrointestinal diseases which can cause bleeding. Once you have that diagnosis, you can begin to consider what hemorrhoid treatment will be right for you, and you will be on the path to eliminating hemorrhoids from your life.

Home Remedies are anything that you can find or do in your own house which will lessen your symptoms. If your hemorrhoids are caught early enough, you can make simple lifestyle changes to clear them up, and you can avoid hemorrhoid treatments altogether.

Do not use dry toilet paper because it is an irritant to the sensitive skin of the anal area and can contain harmful chemicals. An alternative is to use baby wipes or towelettes which will cleanse and soothe the area.
Do not sit on the toilet for long periods of time. Wait till you feel the urge to have a bowel movement and then relieve yourself. Avoid straining and sitting for more than a few minutes, even if you feel you are not done. The urge will return and do not stifle it; otherwise, it can lead to constipation.
Avoid carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, citrus juices, wine, and beer. This will help lower the acidity of your bowel movements which contributes to the itching. Avoid caffeine which relaxes the sphincter muscle contributing to flatulence and skin sensitivity.
Drink more water and add more fiber to your diet to soften your bowel movements and promote regularity. This is probably the most important lifestyle change that you can make because constipation and straining are the usual causes of hemorrhoids.
Consider using enemas that can keep the rectum clean and remove irritants with the use of warm water. Also, enemas can stimulate a bowel movement if you are constipated.
Use ice packs to help relieve inflamed hemorrhoids. Icing the anal area for 10 to 15 minutes, five times a day often provides relief and is an effective hemorrhoid treatment.
Keep the anal area dry with the use of baby powder or corn starch applied to a cotton roll. Placed between the buttocks, the cotton will absorb excess moisture.
Soak in your bathtub using plain warm water, but not hot water, to give moist heat to the anal region. The water should be soap-free because soap is an irritant. The warm water around the anal area causes the veins to relax. This should give you temporary relief from hemorrhoidal pain, and can be done as often as you want during the day for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.
Use a sitz bath as an alternative to soaking in your bathtub, especially today when many homes only have showers. You can buy a sitz bath that will fit over your toilet, and they are relatively inexpensive, most cost less than twenty dollars. They are usually made of plastic in a basin shape that will hold the water you need to immerse your rectal area.

Pregnancy often causes hemorrhoids because of the added pressure of the developing baby in the pelvic area and hormonal changes that are taking place in your body. The good news is that hemorrhoids usually clear up after giving birth. Remember that adding more liquid and fiber to your diet along with moderate exercise will help prevent hemorrhoids during your pregnancy. However, if problems due develop, the hemorrhoid treatments are similar to the home remedies for any typical sufferer.

Soak your bottom in plain, warm water (without soap) as often as you want during the day.
Use a sitz bath which is a plastic basin that will fit on the toilet where you can soak your rectal area for a few minutes. Although, remember that you do not want to sit too long on the toilet as it can create additional pressure on the hemorrhoids.
Apply an ice pack to the affected area several times a day for 10 to 15 minutes. This is an effective hemorrhoid treatment because it can decrease the swelling and discomfort.
Try using both warm and cold treatments, alternating between a warm tub or sitz bath, and an ice pack.
Keep the anal area as dry as possible; use baby wipes or towelettes as toilet tissue. Avoid rubbing the area and pat dry. A cotton roll with baby powder or corn starch placed between the buttocks will help absorb the moisture.
If you sit for long periods of time during the day, be sure that every hour that you get up and move around. This will help relieve the pressure in the pelvic area.

Minimally invasive hemorrhoid treatments are procedures that can be done in your doctor’s office or on an outpatient basis, and usually require no time away from your job. They are quick and effective for many people.

Coagulation is a technique where lasers or infrared lights are used on the hemorrhoid. The method causes the internal hemorrhoid to harden and dry-up. It has few side effects, but the hemorrhoids often return.
Rubber band ligation has a better success rate than coagulation. In this method, the doctor ties off the hemorrhoid at the base with one or two rubber bands. Without a blood supply, the hemorrhoid falls off in a few days. The patient may experience discomfort and bleeding after the procedure, but complications are rare.
Sclerotherapy is a hemorrhoid treatment where a chemical solution is injected into the hemorrhoid causing it to shrink. It is a painless technique, although it seems to be less successful than rubber band ligation and is usually only used on smaller hemorrhoids.

Surgical procedures are the alternatives of last resort in hemorrhoid treatments. If you suffer from severe prolapsed hemorrhoids where all other hemorrhoid treatments have failed, you may be urged to have surgery. This is a difficult option to undergo because of the longer and painful recuperation period, and the considerable expense involved with an operation. Hemorrhoids are usually classified into four degrees for the purpose of surgery. The first degree is for hemorrhoids that bleed but do not prolapse outside the anus. The second degree is for hemorrhoids that prolapse outside the anus but will retract. This usually happens during a bowel movement, and afterward the hemorrhoid retracts by itself into the rectum. The third degree is for hemorrhoids that need to be pushed back manually into the anus after a bowel movement. The fourth degree is for hemorrhoids that cannot be pushed back, and they usually contain rectal tissue which is strangulated or thrombosed (contains blood clots). Usually, surgery is only prescribed for the third and fourth category.

A hemorrhoidectomy is the complete removal of the hemorrhoid by surgery under anesthesia. The procedure has a high complications rate which may include temporary inability to void urine and high urinary tract infection rates. Recovery can be long and painful, so this surgery isn’t usually undertaken except in the severest of cases. Also, studies have shown a possible link between this surgery and lack of bladder control in later life.
Stapled hemorrhoidectomy or PPH (procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids) surgery is the newest innovation in hemorrhoid treatments. It was developed in the early 1990′s as a less drastic surgery with a quicker recovery period. The nontraditional surgery usually lasts from 15 – 30 minutes and the patient can be back at work in a few days. Hemorrhoids are not removed during the surgery but the tissue which supports the hemorrhoids is removed. Usually, it is used in cases of third and fourth degree hemorrhoids which have fallen outside of the anus (prolapsed). Risks that are associated with this procedure are damage to the sphincter muscle or rectal wall, pelvic infection, and persistent pain. Also, the hemorrhoids may reoccur, and it is possible that rectal prolapse (the rectum protrudes from the anus) can result from the surgery
